Mercury Retrograde

Writer's picture: Ruby FalconerRuby Falconer

Mercury, planet of communication, turns retrograde on the 10th degree of Aquarius, activating the waning Saturn/Uranus square.

Mercury describes how we communicate – how we think, speak, and remember. Mercury also describes our reality construct – what we perceive reality to be. In Shamanic Egyptian Astrology, Mercury is Thoth, the Sacred Scribe. Thoth is the creator of language, writing and time. Together, these three create our perception of reality.

Aquarius is the sign of the collective, a relevant factor of this Mercury retrograde period. In Shamanic Egyptian Astrology, this is Ptah, creator of Heaven and Earth – the spatial plane of our collective reality. Mercury in Aquarius draws attention to shared concerns. Mercury retrograde in Aquarius is an opportunity to revisit recent collective decisions and reroute our trajectory.

Mercury will retrograde back into Capricorn, turning direct in alignment with transiting Pluto. Venus turned retrograde very close to this same area on December 19th. Venus and Mercury are activating the degrees of the 2020 conjunction between Saturn, Pluto, and Jupiter, providing an energetic echo of that time.

Capricorn is concerned with the structure of the collective. The 2020 Great Shift Alignment initiated a dismantling of the structure of society, and not just at a national level. The issues confronting us are global problems and we are being challenged to think in terms of the needs of our entire planet. This is a huge perceptual shift, one that will not come easily but is necessary for the survival of our biosphere and all who live on Earth. Use this time to examine your own responses to these challenges and realign as needed.

Mercury/Thoth will be retrograde from January 14 to February 3.
