Pluto - God of Death, Lord of the Underworld, Guardian of the Realm of Shades - is stationary. Stationary periods have a powerful astrological influence, particularly when the outer planets are involved. Pluto has been on the 26th degree of Capricorn for the past two months; the archetype of Transformation and Change is strong at this time.
In the language of Shamanic Egyptian Astrology, Pluto is allied with Osiris, Lord of Regeneration. The symbolism of death and rebirth is central to the Osirian myth. Osiris was murdered by his brother twice, and brought briefly back to life by Isis, his consort and wife. Isis used her magic to sexually awaken Osiris so that together could create a son – Horus, the Young King. Out of Death comes New Life, a fundamental theme of life on Earth.
We Earthlings frequently forget this message. Many of us fear death and also resist its closest relative – change. In our quest to avoid change we create an artificial stasis whereby nothing new comes into our lives. When this happens, our bodies remain alive but our soul dies.
Ironically, the only way to stay truly alive is to be willing to die to that which no longer serves us – or as is said in Native American traditions – no longer grows corn. Why do we hang on to something after it has served its purpose? The only reason is fear.
Our great Lord Pluto – Osiris, Lord of Regeneration – awakens within us our fear of death and our resistance to change. He offers us a challenge – to meet our fear head on, confront the risk and take the leap. To allow something within us to die so that something else can be renewed. Only then can we taste the sweetness of Life.
Pluto/Osiris changes direction on April 27 and will be retrograde until October 6.
