Solstice; Sun enters Capricorn

The Solstice is the time of extremes. Extreme light; extreme dark. Longest day; shortest night. Longest night; shortest day. Cold and getting colder; hot and getting hotter. We balance at the extreme end of the pendulum, preparing to swing back in the other direction.

The December Solstice is the portal that opens the earth sign Capricorn. This is the place on the wheel where the collective creates and implements the guardrails of society; the laws by which a society runs itself and the organizations that enforce those laws - governmental institutions, courts, the police. This is the sign of authority and these natives are often the ones who support and enforce the rules.

Capricorn natives are thoughtful, serious, and – at times – silly. Their special gift lies in organizing and creating structure. In childhood these natives are wise beyond their years and as elders they wear their maturity comfortably. They naturally want to do a good job, and in their shadow lies the pesky demon of perfectionism. They can be authoritarian and even patriarchal, and they are also the ones we look to when we need a serious assessment of any situation. If you want something organized well, call a Capricorn.

In Shamanic Egyptian Astrology, Capricorn is allied with Khnum. Khnum was a god of the Nile and became known as the creator of the humans and animals who walk the Earth. Khnum formed these beings on his potter’s wheel. When we go through a process of transformation and change, Khnum invites us back on to his wheel, dissolves away the old form, and creates something new. Khnum is the flexible elder who does not hang on to form for form’s sake but rather understands that as the essence of being changes, a new container is needed.

The Sun moves into Capricorn/Khnum at 4:21 am EST on December 21.
