The position of Chiron in a natal chart describes our core wound of abandonment. Abandonment and its cousin – betrayal – come through all types of experiences. Some abandonments come from parents, some from siblings or other family members, some from the community – friends, schoolmates, teachers, religious leaders, societal systems. It’s a given that we all get something and that “something” forms the basis of our core wound.

In Greek and Roman myth, Chiron is a centaur – half human and half horse. His mother – a wood nymph who had been raped by a centaur – abandoned him at birth. Chiron grows up to be a highly respected member of the Mt. Olympus community – an advisor to Zeus, teacher to the children of the gods, mentor to many and philosopher to all. Out of pain and abandonment, he creates himself.

In Shamanic Egyptian Astrology, Chiron is allied with Anubis as an adult. Anubis is also abandoned by his mother (Nephthys) and is deeply hurt by her betrayal. Eventually he comes to understand that he has a mission; he is intended to be the guide for the newly deceased to the afterlife. He cannot assume this role – his Soul Purpose - until he releases his attachment to his wound.

Our wounds affect us but they cannot define us. Understanding this is a complicated process. If we are to move beyond our wound we must probe deeply. This process is also painful. It involves confronting the hurts that have been inflicted upon us by others and finding a way to forgive without forgetting. This does not happen easily but we cannot move to the next level of our development unless we engage in it. Chiron retrograde provides the space and time to reflect on our wounding from a safer emotional distance.

Chiron turns retrograde on August 3 in Taurus and will turn direct in Aries on January 6, 2027.
