In traditional astrology, Mercury - the messenger of the gods - rules communication and transportation. In Egyptian myth, Mercury is allied with Thoth, the Sacred Scribe. Thoth is the creator of writing, the alphabet, and time.
Mercury turns retrograde three times a year for approximately three weeks at a time. When Mercury turned retrograde on April 21, it was aligned with the Moon and Uranus and we were still under the influence of a Solar Eclipse (April 19/20). This Mercury retrograde has been in Taurus and has provided an opportunity to reexamine issues related to Earth matters (resources, money, our bodies - including the body of Earth).
Egyptian myth stretches back to pre-history. Some version of Thoth has always existed, although his influence was regional for many centuries. His origins are mysterious, but Thoth does play a role in Egyptian creation stories, implying that Thoth’s existence pre-dates humanity. If we think of the relationship between time, writing and the alphabet, it is possible to understand Thoth’s influence as a creator god – not of humans, the animals, or the Earth itself, but rather of consciousness. Thoth creates our reality construct (what we perceive to be true) through our thoughts and words. This construct changes over time, making Thoth’s influence during our present time particularly important.
As we exit this Mercury retrograde period, complete your assessment of your relationship to your physical form (embodiment), use of resources (assets, money, and talents) and your relationship to the Earth itself. This is a good time to recommit to your experience as an Earthling and change your reality construct as needed.
Mercury turns direct on May 14 at 11:17 pm, EDT.
