Solstice; Sun enters Capricorn

December 21, 2023, 10:27 pm EST.

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, you are experiencing the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year. If you are in the Southern Hemisphere, this is the Summer Solstice, the shortest night of the year. Regardless of where you live, the Sun is entering the earth sign Capricorn.

Capricorn represents the structure of the collective. This sign describes the fabric of society - the government, courts, and police. Capricorn natives have a natural appreciation of systems. They are organized and understand what will work and what won’t. In its shadow, Capricorn can fall into the trap of insisting that a structure be maintained whether it is still useful or not. “We’ve always done it this way and so we will continue.” When this happens, Capricorn can be resistant to change and can become oppressive.

In Shamanic Egyptian Astrology, Capricorn is allied with Khnum. Khnum created the humans and animals of Earth by molding them out of clay on his potter’s wheel. Whenever we go through a process of transformation, Khnum invites us back onto his wheel so that he might realign our ka body – our energetic form – to better accommodate the changes we are going through.

The Solstice represents the completion of a process. We can go no further in this direction. It is time to pause, tune in to where we are, then slowly begin our journey back in the opposite direction. It is appropriate at the Capricorn Solstice to examine the structure that has brought us to this point.

As we hover on the extreme edge of the swing of the pendulum, Khnum calls us back onto his wheel. Be willing to allow this Wise Elder to create a new ka body to support the next phase of your journey.

The Sun will remain in the emanation of Capricorn/Khnum until January 20.
