Mercury Stationary, Turning Direct

On June 29^th Mercury turned retrograde and is now preparing to turn direct. This retrograde phase has taken place in Cancer, the fourth sign of the Zodiac and the first water sign.

In traditional astrology, Cancer governs our home and family. This sign focuses on the physical and emotional conditions needed to ensure a sense of safety. Mercury is about our reality construct – what we believe to be true. Mercury in Cancer addresses our understanding of the conditions required for us to feel physically and emotionally safe.

Mercury retrograde periods provide an opportunity to challenge our assumptions. In this instance, issues will arise around the expression of emotions. These communications may address family matters specifically and – in a more general way - the question of feeling emotionally safe.

In Shamanic Egyptian Astrology, Mercury is allied with Thoth; the sign Cancer is aligned with Nut and Geb, the Divine Parents. Thoth is the creator of language, writing, and time and can be viewed as the creator of this dimensional reality. Nut and Geb – in their expressions as Sky and Earth – represent our home in this dimension.

We all understand that anything can happen at any time on planet Earth. Ultimately, the question is, “How can we feel safe in an unsafe world?” Our emotions – and how we handle them - have everything to do with our feelings of being safe or unsafe.

During this time when Mercury is preparing to turn direct (at 6:58 PM EDT on July 23), think back over the last three weeks and ask yourself what you have been shown about your own emotional maturity? What do you know about yourself and what might there be left to learn?
