Saturn Stationary, Turning Retrograde

Transits of Saturn feel heavy. They are associated with feelings of being stuck and oppressed. A strong Saturn in a natal chart suggests a lifelong battle with feelings of constriction. Transits of Saturn are associated with oppressive periods in our lives. And stations of Saturn coincide with a collective feeling of being stuck in a dense energy that cannot be escaped.

Saturn and its opposite, Jupiter, speak to the constant interplay of opposites that is duality. Jupiter is expansion; Saturn is contraction. Things expand, contract, and then expand again. In the Egyptian pantheon, Saturn is allied with Sobek, the Crocodile God of the Nile. Sobek represents our reptilian brain; this part of our brain regards change as a threat. Our instinct to stay safe can keep us stuck in situations that no longer feed our souls.

In Roman myth Saturn (Kronos to the Greeks) is the father who was so afraid that his children would usurp his power, he swallowed them whole. His youngest child – Jupiter (Zeus) – escapes this fate when his mother spirits him away and brings a stone to Saturn which he swallows instead of their child. Jupiter grows up in secret. When he reaches adulthood, he kills his father by ripping his stomach open with a dagger, thereby releasing his siblings from their confinement. Together they become a new generation of gods known as The Olympians.

Saturn/Sobek represents the wisdom of the elder that can become calcified in a stubborn refusal to allow new ideas to come forth. During this time that Saturn is stationary, reflect on what you are resisting in your life. As Saturn moves through its retrograde phase (July 26 – December 10), there will be less pressure, providing space to manifest the changes that most need to happen in your life.
