July 24, 2025:  New Moon at Leo 2°08’, 3:11 pm EDT.

Sun in Leo; Leo New Moon; Mercury retrograde in Leo - that’s a lot of Leo!

The sign of the New Moon dominates the month ahead and one or more of the inner planets are often in the same sign. This cycle it is Mercury, and not only is Mercury in Leo, Mercury is retrograde (July 17/18 to August 11).

There is a symbiotic relationship between the Moon and Mercury. The Moon is about emotions; Mercury is about thoughts. Emotions affect our thinking. Our thoughts affect our emotions. These two parts of our being interrelate and merge within us – so much so that it is hard to separate them. Mercury retrograde in Leo invites us to examine the state of our personal ego:  How do we regard ourselves? What is our level of self-esteem? What is our self-talk?

This New Moon is in a challenging relationship – a T-square - with Pluto, Eris and Chiron. There will be opportunities for healing on a personal level and also at the level of the collective. These opportunities may come disguised as resentments or disputes with others. Our inner child will show up - disgruntled, hurt, and even angry.  If we’ve done our personal work, we will understand that these are opportunities to speak our truth, own our part, and let go of the disappointments of the past. If we’ve not done our personal work – if we’re stuck in the wounds of our abandoned child – well, that picture will not be pretty. When this sign gets angry, Leo can be domineering and abusive. As the saying goes, “Hurt people hurt people.”

In Egyptian myth, Leo is allied with Anubis in his youth. Anubis was an abandoned child. I’ve told his story in recent posts so I will not repeat it here. Suffice it to say, that in order to fulfill his true purpose as a healer and guide, Anubis must come to terms with his wounds from the past. And so must we all.
