The question of structure is important to those born with Mercury in Capricorn. How to organize something, how to create structure out of chaos, how to maintain structure once it is formed. The latter idea can lead to the shadow expression of this position – inflexible thought. At their best, these individuals look for ways to improve the structure of their world. In their shadow, these people become stuck in thought processes that maintain an established form long past its usefulness.
In the language of Shamanic Egyptian Astrology, Mercury is allied with Thoth, the Sacred Scribe and creator of language, writing and time. Capricorn is allied with Khnum, the god who creates the beings who live on Earth. Khnum is flexible – he willingly adjusts the form of his creations in order to meet changing needs.
The transit of Mercury through Capricorn/Khnum gives us the opportunity to look at ways in which we are holding on to an idea that no longer serves us. On this same day, Warrior Mars moves into fiery Sagittarius. We may find ourselves aggressively acting on ideas that do not address our present needs. It is time for a reassessment – a recalibration of sorts – around the relationship between the world our words define and the actions we take to defend that world.
Mercury/Thoth will turn retrograde on January 14 and will transit this earth sign twice -from December 13 to January 1-2, and again from January 25 to February 14.
Worthy of note – Venus will be retrograde in Capricorn from December 19 to January 29. This combination will activate the degrees of the 2020 Great Shift Alignment, providing an echo of those astrological energies.
