The Solstices mark the extremes of the relationship between the Earth and the Sun. In June, the Northen Hemisphere of the Earth is closest to the Sun, resulting in long days and short nights. The reverse is true in the Southern Hemisphere; the south is farthest from the Sun, producing short days and long nights. Our dance with the Sun is influenced by where we are on the planet, a reality worthy of contemplation.

For all, the June Solstice marks the entry of the Sun into the water sign Cancer. Cancer describes the synthesis of the signs that have come before (Aries, Taurus, Gemini). This synthesis will produce a whole and complete individual in the following sign (Leo). Cancer is about the process of integration that creates that individual.

Cancer concerns itself with the elements central to that creation: home, family, security, and nurturing. Individuals with Cancer strong in their chart are known to be sensitive, sympathetic, and empathic. These are lovely gifts – these individuals are often graced with a kind and nurturing nature – and they also bring challenges. All the water signs have issues around boundaries and Cancer individuals are particularly challenged by emotional boundaries. They are sensitive to the emotional concerns of others and can internalize feelings that belong to another.

In Shamanic Egyptian Astrology, Cancer is allied with the Divine Parents, Nut and Geb. Nut is the Sky Goddess and Geb is the Earth God. Together these two create the biosphere which nurtures and feeds us all. A healthy biosphere is important for the safety and stability of all those who live on Earth, just as a healthy family and stable home is essential in the growth of a child.

The Solstice is exact at 10:42 pm EDT on June 20. The Sun will remain in the emanation of Cancer/Nut and Geb until July 22.
