The Equinoxes are both a moment of balance between opposites and also the commencement of a transition. On the Wheel of the Zodiac, the movement from Pisces to Aries (March) describes the birth of the individual out of the primordial sea. The transition from Virgo to Libra (September) refers to the desire of the fully formed individual for relationship with another.

Librans value harmony, symmetry, and beauty. They bring a light and airy touch to all their affairs. That lightness of being extends to their relationships. Libra is often the peacemaker, smoothing over the rough edges of the more contrary and assertive signs.

The Libran desire to relate is strong – so strong that at times the attraction of relationship blinds Libra to clearly seeing the person they are relating to. Libra can fall prey to a specific kind of codependency – conflict avoidance – which can lead to the manipulation of others through people pleasing, lies, and omissions.

In the Egyptian pantheon, Libra is allied with Ma’at, Goddess of Truth, Justice, and Balance. In myth, Anubis brings the newly deceased into the underworld where Ma’at will weigh their heart on her scale against the long plume she wears on her head. In order to progress to The Duat, the Egyptian version of heaven, the heart must be lighter than her feather.

Ma’at teaches us that grounding in our own bodies when in relationship with another is necessary in order to achieve dynamic balance. There must be an equal exchange of power within all relationships; if equality is not present, we may resort to unhealthy strategies to gain power and to redress imbalances.

The Sun will remain in the emanation of Libra/Ma’at from September 22 to October 22.
