Second sign of the Zodiac and the first earth sign, Taurus grounds the desire of Aries in physical matter. Those with Taurus strong in their chart are centered in their bodies. These are the mechanics, sculptors, gardeners, dancers and yoga practitioners of our world. They seek to understand reality through their bodies. They love comfort, good food, a nice massage. Their sense of touch is important to them; they reach out and touch people and things, so as to know who and what they are.

In their shadow, these folks can be stubborn and resistant to change. They can be acquisitive of money, people, things, and ideas. Earthly manifestations create feelings of safety and it can be challenging to let go.

In Shamanic Egyptian Astrology, Taurus is allied with Hathor, the Earth Goddess. Hathor is among the oldest of the neteru and an early expression of the generative power of the feminine. Hathor’s message is that enlightenment on this plane cannot be found by escaping into the stars. We must come down into form and experience both the pleasures and the pain of embodiment.

In ancient times, Hathor was honored with festivals that included music, drinking, food, and sex. These celebrations were bacchanals, dedicated to the pleasures of the body. Hathor reveled in these celebrations of the divine in earthly form – lush, sensual, and sexual. “Come on down,” Hathor invites. It is only through full embodiment that we are truly alive.
