Sun in Libra & Equinox
September 22 is the Equinox. The two Equinoxes mark the mid-point between the Solstices. Our planet pauses in a moment of perfect balance between extremes.
The September Equinox marks the entry of the Sun into the air sign Libra. The symbol for Libra is the scales, and the ally of Libra in the Egyptian pantheon is Ma’at, Goddess of Truth, Balance and Justice. Ma’at bears some similarity to Athena, the Greek Goddess of Wisdom who also holds a scale, and the Roman Justicia whose image is associated with our courts.
In Egyptian myth, Ma’at plays a prominent role in the Osirian mysteries. The newly deceased are guided by Anubis into the underworld where their heart is weighed on the scale of Ma’at against a feather she wears in her crown. In order for the soul to be granted admission to the Du’at – the Egyptian version of heaven – the heart must be lighter than her feather.
Ma’at represents the stillness experienced when two opposites are in perfect balance and neither dominates the other. The sign Libra marks the place on the Wheel of the Zodiac where the individual is ready to enter into relationship with another. This is the first step toward the development of the collective.
Those with Libra strong in their chart are defined by their relationships. Relationships may be easy or difficult but they are always important. Through interactions with others these individuals learn to define themselves. Hiding in the shadow of the Libran personality is a tendency toward people pleasing. These individuals love harmony and do not like conflict. Their greatest challenge is to learn to be fully themselves while in relationship with others.
The Sun will remain in the emanation of Libra/Ma’at from September 22 to October 23.
