January 18, 2026: New Moon at Capricorn 28°43’, 2:51 pm EST.
2026 opened with a strong emphasis on the earth sign Capricorn. Since the beginning of January, the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars have all been moving through Capricorn and in an opposition to Jupiter in Cancer. The energetic feel of this alignment is reminiscent of early Covid – late 2019 through 2020 – when Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto were in a powerful conjunction in Capricorn. During that transit, circumstances conspired to energetically dismantle the established structure of society.
Capricorn represents the collective systems that provide a container for our lives. The shadow of Capricorn is an authoritarianism that is emblematic of the perspective of The Patriarchy; a “Do not question my authority” attitude. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn – the principle of constraint – and in Egyptian myth is allied with Khnum, creator of the life forms who live on Earth.
Khnum provides a useful antidote to the oppressive energy of the Capricorn shadow. Inherent in his message is the idea that containers (systems) must change as the needs of substance (those who live within the systems) transform. When we undergo change, Khnum invites us onto his potter’s wheel for a spin, dissolving outworn systems and creating something new.
Earth reality is dominated by duality, which can devolve into polarization - a tug of war between opposing perspectives. We can move beyond this struggle by adopting an expanded perspective where we understand right vs wrong to be judgments formed by the opinions of family and society. There are higher truths. Acting from these higher truths will create a more loving world, one we want future generations to inherit. And, in our current moment The Patriarchy with all of its deficits is alive and well.
