January 2, 2026: Chiron Direct
Chiron is a most unusual object. Discovered in 1977, astronomers did not know what it was. Theories ranged from a runaway asteroid to a comet stuck in solar orbit. It is now categorized as a Centaur, a body with characteristics of both an asteroid and a comet.
The designation of “Centaur” is apt. In Roman and Greek myth, Chiron is a centaur – half human, half horse. In one story, Chiron’s mother was a nymph raped by a centaur; she gave birth alone in a cave. When she realized her baby was a centaur, she abandoned him in horror. Wood nymphs took pity on Chiron, and every day brought food to the mouth of the cave. Chiron crawled forward, ate the food, and then retreated to the womb of the cave. Eventually he became too big for the cave and crawled out.
In Egyptian myth, Chiron refers to Anubis who was left in the desert by his mother Nephthys. Anubis was rescued by Isis, twin sister of Nephthys, who taught him the secrets of magic and sorcery. Anubis was destined for great things, but he could not achieve his purpose until he came to terms with the pain of his abandonment.
In astrology, the position of Chiron in a natal chart describes our core wound of abandonment. Stations and transits of Chiron provide opportunities for healing around that core wound. Chiron stays in a sign of the zodiac for 7 years and is currently in Aries. For the last two years, Chiron has been in an alignment with angry Eris, Goddess of Strife and Discord.
Chiron transits provide an opportunity to address the theme of abandonment in your life. During this Chiron station, acknowledge any resentments you may be carrying. The theme of abandonment is in some way connected.
