Sun Enters Leo

Expansive, generous, and creative, Leo is the fifth sign of the Zodiac and the second fire sign. The first six signs of the Zodiac focus on the growth and development of the individual. Leo is the first time we have a whole and complete person, and this individual needs recognition and acknowledgement. It is not surprising that so many people in the performing arts have strong Leo energy in their personality. There is often a “Look at me!” quality to Leo expression.

In Shamanic Egyptian Astrology, Leo is allied with young Anubis struggling to come to terms with his abandonment by his mother. Anubis is the product of a tryst between Nephthys and Osiris, consort to Isis. When Nephthys gives birth, she knows she cannot take her baby home because her consort – the Warrior King Set – will kill him. She takes Anubis into the desert and leaves him. The story has a happy ending; Isis – twin sister of Nephthys and consort of Osiris – scoops baby Anubis up and raises him as her own. She teaches him the magical arts and prepares him for his Soul Purpose, to serve as a guide to the underworld for the newly deceased.

Before Anubis can serve in this role, he must release his emotional attachment to his childhood wounding. He must go through a process – do his personal work, in modern terms. He comes to understand that rather than seeking the recognition and acknowledgment of others he must recognize and acknowledge himself.

Herein lies the deeper meaning of the sign Leo. Leo natives are generous with praise of others because they understand what it is to be ignored, unseen, and to feel uncherished. We cannot undo the hurts of the past. But we can learn to acknowledge and cherish ourselves. This is the challenge – and the opportunity – of Leo.
