On a collective level, Mercury governs communication and transportation systems. On a personal level, Mercury describes how we think and communicate. Aquarius is the sign of the collective, associated with group experiences, technology and future visions of society.
Mercury is comfortable in Aquarius. Individuals with this placement are often visionaries, immersed in thoughts about our collective future, both from a practical level (science and technology) and spiritually. As we enter the Aquarian Age, these individuals are often at the forefront of envisioning a new planetary design and are excited when they find others who share their dream. Like all air signs, Aquarius lives in the world of the mind and is not naturally comfortable with feelings. In its shadow, Mercury in Aquarius can express as an individual who enjoys discussing ideas but has difficulty processing emotions.
In the language of Shamanic Egyptian Astrology, Mercury is Thoth, the Sacred Scribe. Thoth holds open a channel between our individual consciousness and Divine Source, through which information is downloaded. Aquarius is associated with Ptah, the god who is the creator of Heaven and Earth. Ptah did not create the creatures of Earth (that is Khnum); he therefore functions as a universal rather than personal archetype. True to the Aquarian ideal, Ptah’s attention is on the bigger picture.
A transit of Mercury/Thoth through Aquarius/Ptah provides an opportunity for creative visioning about the future, both on a personal and collective level. During this time, think big, both for yourself as well as for our planet.
Mercury/Thoth will remain in Aquarius/Ptah until February 3. Mercury will revisit Aquarius during a retrograde phase from March 4 – 16.
