Restriction, limitation, containment, protection. These are the qualities of Saturn, ruler of the earth sign Capricorn. Transits of Saturn can feel oppressive. The container is closing in and we feel trapped by an immoveable force.
To understand Saturn, think of an egg containing a chick. The purpose of this egg is to protect and nurture. At some point, this chick will outgrow its container. There’s no more nurturance in the egg – the chick has consumed all of it. What once was protection is now a trap. The shell of the egg must shatter and the chick must escape or it will die.
Saturn’s reentry into Capricorn brings us back to the primary theme of this Great Shift year. Our collective container no longer serves us. It has grown too tight, limiting, and oppressive. It must shatter for new life to thrive, just as the egg must shatter and release the chick.
We now have 5 planets retrograde (Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto). We are revisiting issues that surfaced from mid-January through mid-April. This is a re-do – an opportunity to examine and address the changes we already know need to be made to our collective container.
In the language of Shamanic Egyptian Astrology, Saturn is Sobek – The Old King. Capricorn is aligned with Khnum, the god who creates the creatures of the Earth on his potter’s wheel. Khnum also uses his wheel to reform our ka body (our energetic form) whenever we go through a process of transformation and change. Saturn/Sobek in the emanation of Capricorn/Khnum puts the focus back on the changes that must be made to our societal structure. There is no choice; the Old King is dead. The container must shatter for new life to survive.
Saturn/Sobek will remain retrograde until September 29.
